The Twilight of Empires and the End of Social Networks#
Now let's talk about social networks.
What do people think of first?
The movie about Facebook? Cyberbullying? Information echo chambers? Algorithms? Brain Rot? Hype accounts? Human flesh searches? Abstract memes? Account bans? Internet cesspools? Dragging others into fights? Gender opposition?
From the keywords, it's clear that many people feel social media is getting worse, at least something feels off.
Twelve years ago, the golden age of social networks and the internet had just begun, and Tom Standage published "A Brief History of Social Media: From Papyrus to the Internet," in which he was very optimistic about the future of online social networks:
Since the founding of the New York Sun in 1833, until the "old media" era between the television age, it was an abnormal phenomenon;
The era of newspapers, radio, and television was just a "small detour" for social media;
For 150 years, person-to-person media was overshadowed by the centralized mass media of broadcasting, and now the pendulum has swung back.
But the pendulum will not stop swinging just because it has reached the "correct" position.
Now, visibly, all social media applications are inevitably transforming or have transformed into the shape of TikTok:
Increasingly pushing video clips based on user viewing behavior rather than social relationships, driven by artificial intelligence, has become a new type of "super television."
In October 2022, Twitter was sold to Musk due to economic pressure.
On November 4 of the same year, the stock price of social media giant Meta fell to $88, halving from its peak of $384.
On February 1, 2024, Meta's stock price had just regained some ground, and Facebook was about to celebrate its 20th birthday when The Economist published an article declaring "The End of Social Networks."
Social media has become no longer "social"
The frequency of people posting is declining
Since 2020, the proportion of Americans who enjoy documenting their lives online has dropped from 40% to 28%
Those still speaking are either hoping or worrying about being chosen by the algorithm god, imagining how they will welcome their "15 minutes of fame," and their remarks have become increasingly strange.
Meanwhile, more and more countries are beginning to legislate restrictions on minors' use of social networks, treating them like alcohol, driving, and R-rated movies:
The lights of Empire Square have gone out.
People scatter in all directions.
Fleeing Weibo, fleeing Moments, fleeing Zhihu, fleeing Douban, fleeing Twitter, fleeing Xiaohongshu, fleeing Douyin.
Fleeing all algorithms and social media.
